The Greatest Gift

What is the greatest gift you have ever received? Who gave it to you? How did you feel when you opened it?

I believe the greatest gift I have ever received is the unconditional acceptance and unconditional love I received when I first shared my deepest pain that carried a lot of shame. I was in a psychotherapy training in the middle of a room of students. Sharing my deepest pain in the middle of a circle of aspiring psychotherapists is something I thought I could never do. I was more comfortable with hiding my wounds and not wanting to be seen, but the pain was so intense as it spontaneously arose in a summer clinical skills intensive. As I shared the experience outloud, something that had been buried within me for a long time, even hidden from myself, I dissolved into a sobbing, vulnerable two year old. I looked up from my deep grief and anguish into the eyes of unconditional compassion. There was a direct meeting of my deepest, rawest, most vulnerable place of wounding in his eyes. I believe that only one who has experienced and arisen from the depths of pain can meet that level of pain in another. That moment of pure presence was the anchor that allowed me to sail on into the stormiest, most turbulent tsunami of emotion and pain as I embarked upon a healing journey into wholeness. It would be years before I could let go fully of the pain body and wounds that I carried for so long.  I will forever be grateful Walt!

Six years later I would meet another professor who was able to meet my even deeper layers of unconscious. When this layer arose there were no words, it was pre-verbal, deep, ancient wounding. When this layer came to the surface fast and furiously, I was again in the middle of the room, this time in a psychosynthesis training. I think my subconscious knew I was in the presence of safety and unconditional love. This time as I looked into his eyes, the presence of God was gazing back at me in his eyes! One look through his soul into the face of God and I was made whole. I will never be the same! The embodied presence of God in another human being is powerful. Thank you John! May you rest in peace.

I would define that energy of unconditional love, radical forgiveness, unlimited acceptance, infinite presence and compassion as Divine Grace. It has nothing to do with deservability. We have all fallen short and made mistakes. We are all fully human, therefore imperfect beings, and we came here to experience life in its full catastrophe (Jon Kabat Zinn); to experience life from heart-stopping deep despair and loss to the fullest joy and breathtaking beauty. The full continuum of life experiences can be seen from the higher Divine viewpoint. The meaning gleaned from negative experiences arises and can help unfold our spiritual growth and development into our true divine nature. You are unconditionally accepted, radically forgiven and unconditionally loved right now. Give thanks for Grace!

Grace is knowing that we have made mistakes and at the same time we are completely accepted and unconditionally loved. We are healed as we are open to all experiences, trust God, go within and are willing to feel all our feelings. We can only heal what we are willing to feel. No matter where you are right now, no matter what you have done or not done, stop, place your hand over your heart and breathe Divine Grace into your body. Whatever is soothing, comforting and nurturing to you, imagine it pouring into your heart now. Open and receive Divine Grace now.

Lovingkindness, mercy, and unconditional acceptance are healing balm where we have judged or condemned ourself. Grace replaces disapproval and making ourselves wrong or bad with unconditional positive regard. It is the free gift that arises from the heart of God. Grace is the energy of soothing, comforting, healing, transformative unconditional love. Divine Grace says “I don’t care what you have done or what you may think about what you have done, you are loved, accepted and perfect in my eyes. “You are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you” Isaiah 43:4.

No matter if you choose to blame, judge or disapprove of something or someone, the Holy Spirit always knows the bigger picture. There is always more than what meets the eye. It was not done to you, but for you. From the higher view and the bigger picture that we cannot see, all is perfect as it is.

“Behind all things, lies something vaster, everything is a path, a portal, or a window opening on something more than itself” Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

Julian of Norwich wrote that “God sees us as perfect and waits for the day when humans’ souls mature so that evil and sin will no longer hinder one’s life.” It is only our own judgment of our mistakes that keeps us imprisoned in our lower nature. Colin Tipping also teaches in Radical Forgiveness that we are able to forgive when we realize that all experiences are for our highest good to help each other wake up to the truth of our divine true nature and learn what we came to earth to learn. We can allow Divine Grace to flow when we realize we have been healing angels for others and they for us in the dream, play or disguise of hurting, wounding, abusing, neglecting or causing each other pain.

Symptoms of disconnection are pain, illness or trauma. Symptoms of connection and oneness with God are peace, joy, love and harmony. We are all meant to remember our connection to the whole, forgive and wake up to embody and be unconditional love. We are meant to remember our connection and embody the presence of God for each other. Everything that God created is good or very good; to get to excellent all we need to add is Love. 1 Corinthians 12:31 says “But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way [the gift of Love].”

There is a higher view and everything has a deeper purpose and meaning to help us to wake up, learn to love or experience the full range of feelings and situations to expand into the vast multidimensional being that we really are. Turn your “why me” question into “May it be done unto me; Thy Will be done”.  Ask yourself: What is the higher view of this situation? What is the message of love in this experience? How is God using this illness or symptoms to teach, grow or expand my life? What is the deeper meaning for this negative experience? What else is possible? “Fear not, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant it for evil; but God meant it for good…he reassured them and comforted them” Genesis 50:19-21 “All things work together for good” Romans 8:28

Open and receive the greatest gift of all: Divine Grace! “Grace finds goodness in everything. Grace makes beauty out of ugly things. Grace finds beauty in everything”U2
