Hearing the Bells

“I heard the bells on Christmas day, their old familiar carols play, and wild and sweet the Word repeats of ‘peace on earth, good will to men’. I thought how as the day had come, the belfries of Christendom had rolled along the unbroken song of ‘peace on earth, good will to men.’ And in despair I bowed my head: there is no peace on earth, I said. For hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth good will to men. Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: God is not dead, nor doth he sleep; THE WRONG SHALL FAIL, THE RIGHT PREVAIL with peace on earth, good will to men. Till ringing, singing on its Way, the world revolved from NIGHT TO DAY: a Voice, a chime, a chant sublime, of peace on earth, good will to men” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1864)

“The silent Word is pleading…let loving hearts enthrone Him..Joy, joy the Word made flesh” William Chatterton (1865)

Have you heard the bells of heaven? the angels singing? the Voice of the True Shepherd? the audible Voice? the knowing in your heart? the witness of your spirit? the heavens proclaiming his glory? seen the goodness of God in the land of the living? the earth in solemn stillness, a holy hush in his presence? tidings of comfort and joy? the holy tide of Christ bringing redeeming grace? mourning turned to gladness? pain turned to ease? tears turned to joy? glad hearts with holy rapture burning? the first heavenly state again takes place? all this void Christ a-filling? your soul feeling its worth with new heavenly birth? being cherished so never to perish? have you seen the Light? are you singing the New Song?

“For lo! the days are hastening on by prophets seen of old, when the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold, when the new heaven and earth shall own the Prince of Peace their King, and all the world send back the song which now the angels sing” Edmund Hamilton Sears (1849)

“Then let all with one accord, sing praises to our heavenly Lord; that hath made heaven and earth of naught and with His Blood mankind hath bought” John Stainer (1871)

Be still and KNOW that Jesus is King of kings and Lord of lords! let him teach you Wisdom in your secret heart for God desires TRUTH in our inward being, washed, purified, made white as snow in our INSIDES; filled with joy and gladness; a new clean pure heart and righteous holy spirit within us; in his Presence, restored in the JOY of his salvation; upheld with a willing spirit; able to teach transgressors to return to Thee; singing aloud of Thy deliverance; open our lips and our tongue will sing by the Holy Spirit (Psalm 51:6-15). “Hail the heaven born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and Life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, born that we may no more die, born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth” Charles Wesley (1739)

Jesus says you must be born again OF God, OF Water and OF Spirit to see and enter the kingdom of God and his righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit; Jesus says you must become like a little child, taking God as Father, growing and maturing into a spotless bride for her One Husband, who makes herself ready by keeping full of oil, fire, and eyes to see (seven spirits from the throne sent to earth; sevenfold HOLY Spirit of God); the lamp of the Lamb in you (wife of the Lamb; two become one); his glory as the light in you; the wall of his fiery Presence wrapped around you; the Holy Spirit dwelling in you making you the new temple of God, holy, perfect (lacking nothing) having gone THROUGH the fire, floods, trials, tests of faith to KNOW without a shadow of doubt. Christ in you, the sure high hope and eager expectation, a tree of life and blessed assurance: foretastes of glory divine when Jesus is mine! heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his Blood, perfect submission is perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight: angels descending bring from Above echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blessed: watching and waiting, looking Above, filled with his Goodness and lost in his Love! (Fanny Jane Crosby, 1873)

“Sing choirs of angels, sing in exultation; sing all ye citizens of heaven Above [on earth!]! Glory to God, all glory in the Highest! O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord!” John Francis Wade (1743)

“All is calm, all is bright…tender and mild…in heavenly Peace…shepherds quake at thy sight, glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing Alleluia… Son of God, Love’s pure Light radiant beams from Thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming Grace [the day dawns; the morning star rising in your heart every morning (2 Peter 1:19); the Sun of Righteousness rises in you (Malachi 4:2)]” Joseph Mohr (1816)

“Hear the angel’s warning…The God of Might, our hope and expectation…comes in human flesh to dwell, our God with us, Emmanuel, the night of darkness ENDING, our fallen race befriending” Johann Rist (1641)

“Of the Father’s Love begotten, ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the Source, the ending He of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see…by the Holy Ghost conceiving, bore the Savior of our race (HUMAN RACE not skin color; stop discriminating by external appearances for God judges the HEARTS of men)…the world’s Redeemer…O ye heights of heaven adore him: angel hosts his praises sing: powers, dominions bow before him, and extol our God and King: let no tongue on earth be silent, every voice in concert ring!” Marcus Aurelius Clemens Prudentius (4th century)

“A great and mighty wonder, a full and holy cure!…The Word becomes incarnate AND remains on High…All he comes to ransom, by all be he adored..the Savior AND the Lord” John Mason Neale (1862)

Isaiah foretold it…we behold it…Proclaimed by angels bright…Christ the Lord of Glory born this night…dispels in glorious splendor the darkness everywhere. True man, yet very God, from sin and death he saves us and lightens every load” Theadore Baker (1897)

“The world long lay in sin and error pining, till he appeared and the soul felt its worth, a thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!…Led by the Light of faith serenely beaming, with glowing heartsled by the Light of a star sweetly gleaming…Truly he taught us to love one another: his law is Love and his gospel is Peace; chains shall he break…in his Name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we; let all within us praise his holy Name. Christ is the Lord…His power and glory evermore proclaim!” Placide Cappeau (1847)

The Lord God omnipotent REIGNS; King of kings, Lord of lords, forever and ever and ever. Amen! Hallelujah!

  1. Amen another great word and songs Yvonne, God is love but so many tend to forget that love punishes evil and wrongdoing and the Church forgets this is not heaven and we have enemies to fight or we lose the freedoms that even allow us to worship him, for we do have an enemy and everyone is not our brother and sister only the true body, one day we will in counter a place where that perfect love is, as now we can only visit in the spirit, and we will be there for ever, but unfortunately here we have to fight, and even take lives at times we other countries try to take our freedoms away, but at least we can sit in those heavenly places when we get into his presence, some are just confused and let the enemy tell them God is just love and will allow anything, they better read the true word, Hen 12:6, but he sure sent the true peace and joy into the world and we can only experience it in Jesus Christ our Lord and his precious Holy Spirit. May God richly bless you my dear lady, and may you have a very Merry Christmas.

Thanks Yvonne. Great collection of timeless classics. What a different world it was then, across a great divide. Their powerful witness still resonates today. We must return to the pure Word of God. All glory to the King of kings! Merry Christmas and Blessings to you.
